7 Ways to Create Timeless Spaces Built to Last

Timeless design goes a long way—it’s here for the long haul and is not meant to go out of style. With a design that can withstand the seasonal changes and the test of time, you can easily tweak and update your space with minimal accessories and accents when you feel you are in the mood for trends or simply something new.

In my opinion, what truly stays timeless is something that reflects your most authentic self. Design is and will always be personal—and great design should be able to grow and evolve alongside you.

Check out these 7 easy ways you can start creating timeless spaces built to last:

01. Opt for COLOURS THAT YOU RESONATE WITH

Take note of the colours you’re naturally drawn to and the ones that bring the kind of energy you want to feel in your space—these will become the foundation of your home’s palette.

If you gravitate toward neutral tones, begin with lighter shades as your base and build depth by layering earthy hues, subtle colours, and gentle patterns. This approach creates calm, balanced spaces that feel soothing rather than overwhelming, with brighter or bolder colours used thoughtfully as accents.

If you love embracing colour, larger applications of bolder hues can make confident statements and bring a sense of movement and vibrancy to your home. Pairing strong colours with playful patterns adds personality and character, resulting in spaces that feel expressive and dynamic.

Whichever direction you choose, both approaches offer a strong foundation that you can continue to build on and layer over time.

02. Mix Materials & Textures

Create a balanced space by playing with different materials and contrasting textures—from wood, stone and metals to glass, fabrics, natural weaves and patterns. This is such a fun way to add detail to and elevate your home!

03. Combine Contemporary with Traditional

The synergy of pairing contemporary design with traditional pieces creates a space that doesn’t only look visually interesting, but also feels stimulating. Layer on with pieces that you love and reflect your personality—like a family heirloom, a sculpture from your favourite artist, or any artwork that has sentimental value to you on. You can also do this by combining old and new concepts, like applying decorative mouldings in a modern way or using limewash paint in a contemporary colour, accentuated with an interesting light piece, for example.  It’s these things that will make a space feel current yet have character, and ultimately, feel unique to you.

04. Invest in Good Quality Pieces

For design to withstand the test of time, it has to be made of good quality material. Be practical and invest in pieces that will last longer, grow with you and can eventually be passed on as heirlooms within your family.

Remember: higher price tags don't always mean better quality! You just need to know the right places to look. This is when it’s beneficial to have an interior designer on board.  Working with a professional will not only give you insight on the best places to shop, but will also give you access to trade-only suppliers and discounts to help you get more with less.

For me, it’s about buying pieces that you will treasure for a long time. When you choose your wallpaper for a room you spend most of your day in, it should not feel ‘old’ to you within a decade. When you decide on a sofa, it needs to be comfortable and easy to maintain for at least 10 years. When buying art, it should bring you joy, inspire you, and bring you bring you back to happy memories.

05. Add Foliage

Enhancing spaces with greenery helps create a calm sanctuary within your home. I especially love doing this for clients who live extremely busy lifestyles and don’t often find themselves being able to escape to nature. Using foliage for ornamentation throughout evokes a feeling of serenity and tranquility, and allows for that much needed recharge at the end of the day.

06. Value Empty Space

Sometimes, less, really is more. Keep in mind that space is just as important as what you put in it. Preserving empty space allows for a good flow of chi throughout your home.

This is especially important to remember so you can avoid a cluttered home (and mind) down the line.

07. Invest in storage

I mean, really, who doesn’t love (or need) extra storage space? Investing in good quality storage is key to maintaining a clutter-free home. Even the most minimal among us will continue to acquire things in time, and having this in place will help with organisation and overall cleanliness. Bespoke joinery and freestanding storage furniture tend to be pricey but they are very much needed in creating homes that stay tidy! With limitless options to bespoke joinery and so many beautiful case goods in the market, storage is not just a necessity but can even act as a conversation piece and easily tie in to your aesthetic vision.
